Lineage:
Original master recording: Neumann TLM-170 (cardoids) -> Sonosax -> Teac DAP20 DAT (16 bit, 48khz, EMPHASIS on) DAT playback: Sony R500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastered: Soundforge Pro 11.0 - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. File processed with SOX 14.4.2 to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then into to Soundforge for volume normalization, clap/whistle/yell scrubbing, dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.
Taper Notes:
View NotesNote that I scrubbed hundreds and hundreds of nearby loud claps/whistles/yells from this recording to make it as close to perfect as possible. Also note that there is a rather quick fade after the Breakfast at Volo's (from set 2, not the Soundcheck version) as I chose that moment to swap in a new blank DAT tape as I was afraid the show was going to run long and potentially get cut otherwise (and it DID run long -- OVER 4 HOURS)! Entire show with Michael Ray on trumpet * = w/"Vitamin B" Bryan Smith on tuba ^ = w/Clyde Stubblefield on 2nd drum kit and vocals # = w/Marshall Allen on saxophone ~ = w/Peter Prince (Moon Boot Lover) on guitar/vocals $ = without Benj on bass + = w/Butch Trucks on 2nd drum kit % = w/Pauley Ethnic on rap $ = sung as "Fire On The Hudson" - loose jam version only - = w/John Mishna on guitar @ = w/Kerry from Nurpathic Gypsy, Scott Chasolin from Ulu on organ x = w/Hans Broeking (Electric Hill) on drums or percussion, Olivia Cornell on vocals [1] = Duke Ellington cover [2] = Josef Zawinul cover [3] = Sun Ra cover [4] = Sam & Dave cover [5] = Tower Of Power cover [6] = Stevie Wonder cover [7] = The Meters cover [8] = Otis Redding cover [9] = James Brown cover [10] = Etta James cover Ulu played in the downstairs lounge between sets Taper notes: To recap of what I wrote in my previous BARN entry (#172) -- the first week of this 3 week Deep Banana Blackout "Boot Camp" run at Wetlands in April 1999: Getting back to my old favorite venue, The Wetlands (which was, for a while, my second home...), I begin a series of releases to fill in the historical blanks of the band Deep Banana Blackout. I saw this band, if my records are correct, 27 times between 1997 and 2000, and so far I have only posted a couple of recordings I made of them. At most (if not all) of these shows I was the only taper -- so checking the historical record on archive.org, there are huge holes which are concerts that only I recorded. For a few years running, this band was the best thing out there in terms of a reliable funk show -- so danceable, so much fun mixing solid originals with funk covers covering all the bases - James Brown, The Meters, P-Funk, Janis Jopin, etc. -- with Jen Durkin as a super spunky high energy lead singer. ALWAYS a good time!!! Fast forward to a February 18, 2017 when word gets out that classic James Brown drummer Clyde Stubblefield had died. On Facebook, I see photos that the band Deep Banana Blackout has posted -- in one of them, their drummer Eric Kalb is standing backstage at Wetlands, arm-in-arm with two incredible (and now, sad to say, dead) drummers -- Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers, and Clyde Stubblefield; and another photo featuring those same guys plus Michael Ray (sometime trumpet player for Sun Ra Arkestra AND Kool And The Gang, leader of his own band The Kosmic Krewe, and occasional horn player with Phish and Trey Anastasio). I asked to be reminded whether this was part of a New Years run from Wetlands, but the band's former manager Bob Kennedy reminded me that the photos were taken during one night of a 3 week Wetlands run (once a week on Thursdays) from April of 1999 which the band had dubbed "Boot Camp" and would feature a variety of big name special guests -- in addition to Butch, Clyde, and Michael, other guests from this run included Marshall Allen, Fred Wesley, DJ Logic, Eric Krasno and Neal Evans of the (then) newly formed Soulive, Dr. Didg (also now sadly passed on), Dean Bowman of Screaming Headless Torsos, and lots of other friends of the DBB. Notes about this particular show: This performance was from the second (and in my opinion the best) week of the run -- and features the band firing on absolutely all cylanders (with Michael Ray contributing to nearly all of the show) before even getting to the big name guests. First up was Clyde Stubblefield, who propelled much of James Brown's super funk music over the years. Once he hits the stage, things head straight for the stratosphere! Speaking of the stratosphere, also sitting in for most of this show was Marshall Allen who was Sun Ra's sax player for many many years (and now is the band leader for Sun Ra's posthumous Akrestra). His innovative sax playing is featured throughout this show (and can be very plainly heard in the take of "Breakfast at Volo's" from the soundcheck, included here) -- often playing around with atonal bleats and squawks. To quote Bob Kennedy, the yin of Clyde's super in-the-pocket drumming set off against the yang of Marshall Allen's "out there" playing really create a special chemistry! And I haven't even gotten to the Butch Trucks sit-in yet -- as recounted by Bob, the band presented Butch a list of cover songs the band knew to choose for his sit-in, but he specifically called for 2 DBB originals (Hear My Song and Tug) that were on their first album which he'd learned and wanted to play! Butch, as the powerhouse drummer from the Allman Brothers (now also sadly gone) really kicks the band's ass and takes things to the next level. WOW! Honorary mention goes to the totally-out there but sweet-voiced and guitar-shredder, Peter Prince. He pitches in to help deliver stellar versions of Tower Of Power's "What Is Hip" (with Sun Ra's "Saturn" tucked in the middle -- surely the only time those two songs have been paired together by any band in concert), Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", and Sam And Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'". Anyway this show runs just over 4 hours (if you include the 8 minutes of the soundcheck of "Breakfast at Volo's" presented here -- which THANK GOODNESS we were there to record as it's a tour de force in and of itself and completely different than the version played during the main show) and there is not one weak moment in all of it. I'd say that this was absolutely a peak moment in the band's career -- in all liklihood the best show they EVER PLAYED! I hope you enjoy listening to it 18 years later!!! Note that Bob Kennedy (the band's former manager) wrote a thorough history of the band -- which included a relatively significant discussion of this run of shows here on jambands.com: http://www.jambands.com/features/2003/01/23/deep-banana-blackout-an-insider-s-retrospective Enjoy this piece of history! Recorded, transferred, mastered, tracked, tagged, and posted by Scott Bernstein DAT Transfer: 2/28/2017 Mastering, tracking, tagging: 3/15/2017-4/12/2017 There is a standard CD-ready 44.1khz version of this recording (which has undergone a sample rate conversion and should be a just hair worse sounding) available at https://archive.org/details/dbb1999-04-15.flac16.44khz which is the version you should download IF AND ONLY IF you plan on burning CDs.
