For BARN188, I have taken a request (sorry, I can't recall who requested this!) of a show that I'd apparently forgotten about!  This was a big night (now that my memory has been jogged from listening to the show) -- a late night show which featured 2 killer funk bands -- Lettuce opening, and then Ivan Neville's new project, Dumpstaphunk.  Though I'd seen Ivan at least twice before (once in a tiny venue here in NYC called The I Lounge, and once as an extra member playing with George Porter's then band, PBS), this was my first time getting to check out this amazing project, Dumpstaphunk -- a band so supremely funky that they need 2 bassists!

Anyway, as it so happens, Phish's Trey Anastasio was playing in Philly that night, and he decided to drop in to jam at this gig.  I assume that his connection to this band was through Tony Hall, who Trey had played with in the "Dave Matthews And Friends" project the previous year.  Trey sat in for 2 covers (let's face, it all of Dumpsta's repertoire was pretty much covers at this early time in their history) and then took the lead as the band played his original, "Cayman Review" (in funkier slower take) which he'd played earlier that night with his own band.  Then a couple of songs later, we got an EVEN BETTER sit in from Eric Krasno (of Lettuce and Soulive).  Ontop of all of that, the Lettuce horn section and Big Sam Williams played with Dumpsta for large portions of the show.

In terms of the setlist, they covered all of the core funk bases - P-Funk, The Meters, Stevie Wonder, Sly And The Family Stone, and played a couple of originals that they had.  What a great introduction to a new band!!!

In terms of the recording, it took me a literal ton of work to master it up.  There was at least one extremely annoying person who constantly clapped RIGHT INTO MY MICROPHONES through the entire Trey sit-in (among other times), and I wound up scrubbing out over 550 claps, whistles and yells, which took me weeks and weeks to finish.  I hope you all appreciate the hard work and TLC that I put into this recording for you all to enjoy!

The Lettuce set should be next in my queue.

For BARN188, I have taken a request (sorry, I can't recall who requested this!) of a show that I'd apparently forgotten about!  This was a big night (now that my memory has been jogged from listening to the show) -- a late night show which featured 2 killer funk bands -- Lettuce opening, and then Ivan Neville's new project, Dumpstaphunk.  Though I'd seen Ivan at least twice before (once in a tiny venue here in NYC called The I Lounge, and once as an extra member playing with George Porter's then band, PBS), this was my first time getting to check out this amazing project, Dumpstaphunk -- a band so supremely funky that they need 2 bassists!

Anyway, as it so happens, Phish's Trey Anastasio was playing in Philly that night, and he decided to drop in to jam at this gig.  I assume that his connection to this band was through Tony Hall, who Trey had played with in the "Dave Matthews And Friends" project the previous year.  Trey sat in for 2 covers (let's face, it all of Dumpsta's repertoire was pretty much covers at this early time in their history) and then took the lead as the band played his original, "Cayman Review" (in funkier slower take) which he'd played earlier that night with his own band.  Then a couple of songs later, we got an EVEN BETTER sit in from Eric Krasno (of Lettuce and Soulive).  Ontop of all of that, the Lettuce horn section and Big Sam Williams played with Dumpsta for large portions of the show.

In terms of the setlist, they covered all of the core funk bases - P-Funk, The Meters, Stevie Wonder, Sly And The Family Stone, and played a couple of originals that they had.  What a great introduction to a new band!!!

In terms of the recording, it took me a literal ton of work to master it up.  There was at least one extremely annoying person who constantly clapped RIGHT INTO MY MICROPHONES through the entire Trey sit-in (among other times), and I wound up scrubbing out over 550 claps, whistles and yells, which took me weeks and weeks to finish.  I hope you all appreciate the hard work and TLC that I put into this recording for you all to enjoy!

The Lettuce set should be next in my queue.
