God Street Wine fans, rejoice!  I am finally making some progress on my GSW archives...so here is BARN238, the first of 3 nights of GSW's 1994 Thanksgiving run.  Coming just 6 weeks after the Irving Plaza $1.99 Romances album release show that I recently posted (and apparently after some heavy touring), this show is very different from the Irving show.  First of all, this was not a big-time NYC show, so the band is a bit looser in general -- but you can hear the chemistry they had after several weeks of touring and joy to be home for a Thanksgiving run -- and on this night at the "home" of the one and only Bruce Springsteen.

Kicking things off with a great rocking "Henrietta", the band continues with a couple of strong and tight "oldies" (at the time) -- "Vanity Street" and "Borderline", before introducing a new one which I'd never heard before -- the fun "Twichin'".  They follow that up always-welcome jam vehicle "Hellfire" -- and this one is no slouch.  Also of note is a really early (and somewhat rarer) pick "Seeing Your Meaning" which gets a standout peformance here, the instrumental "The Dinner Guest" (which I'd first heard at the Irving show in October and seems to have gotten a lot of play on this tour, but not much since), the recently-introduced "R U 4 Real" (with a long jammed-out outro), and a rockin' "Nightingale" to close the first set.

Second set starts out with standard, well-played takes on "Into the Sea" and "Mile By Mile" before kicking into gear with the rocker "Stone House".  They then take things into more stranger (and welcome) territory with "Cheap Utah Blues" (also very rarely performed).  A beautiful version of "Waiting For The Tide" precedes a (sadly) unremarkable version of "Electrocute" (which is often one of their best jams -- hey, you can't win 'em all). Of special interest in the second half of this set are the new tunes "Don't Tell God" (not frequently performed) and the extremely emotional (and also infrequently performed) "Wake Up Now".  Also of note in this show is another infrequently-performed old time jazz-sounding instrumental "One Armed Man".

This show has a good mix of strong picks from the $1.99 Romances album they were promoting, deep rarities, and brand new (at the time) songs.  Lo wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving (this was the day before and the reason I was in New Jersey) and invites everyone to join them on Friday for their next show at the legendary Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY (note that this was several decades before Pete Shapiro bought it and renovated it -- it was still in its shabby shape, with general admission seats on the floor).
