Continuing on my journey through my God Street Wine archives, for BARN 247, I present to you GSW's return to Irving Plaza show from 4/12/1996.  This is a very different band than the one that had last played at Irving on 12/31/1994 -- they had toured around the world, performed on the HORDE tour, released their album on a major label, and seen their ambitions let down by that major label.  And, to be honest, the first time I was ever disappointed by the band.

As you'll hear Lo speak about -- apparently there was very early internet webcast of the first set.  Sadly for those people listening at home, the first set was not great. An overwhelming amount of new songs were presented on this night -- of varying quality, plus a few classics -- though some of those classics rearranged into inferior (in my opinion) versions ["Brand New Pussycat" stands our for me as an example of a song with an inferior rearrangement].  Lo even makes a comment in the second set akin to "It's too bad this wasn't the set that was webcast".

Admittedly this is not a recording that I have come back to over the years.

A few notes I took while listening to this show:
Untitled Take Two sounds eerily like U2's "MLK" but I never realized it before this listen
You can hear a slight crackling from an onstage cable during the first minute or 2 of "Girl On Fire" until it gets straightened out
Features a different Bo Diddley-like (and IMO inferior) arrangement of "Brand New Pussycat"
"Which Way Will She Go?" reminds me of a mashup of Bob Dylan's "She Belongs To Me" and "Visions of Johanna"
"Maybe" is a piano-led song I had zero recollection of, but it's pretty
First time I've ever heard a "mellow" version of "Hellfire"
"RU 4 Real?" has a beautiful organ coda
Before "Gem", Aaron announces "We're going to play 2 new songs for you next"
"Imogene" is the highlight of this show.  It's a classic version with a beautiful, long jazzy scat segment by Aaron followed by an absolutely out-of-this-world jam with all band members firing on all cylinders.  If nothing else, give this a listen.  "Epilog" caps the 2nd set off beautifully.
"If I Can Dream" is a cool Elvis cover in the encore!
