Still pursuing my quest to post all of my classic GSW recordings, we now come to BARN248, a show where the band returned to their home turf of The Wetlands nearly 4 years after they outgrew it. Billed as "Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra", the band had a whole slew of new tunes that they were planning to go record in the studio the following day.  So this served as both a rehearsal for the band and an introduction for the audience to this new material (which really does dominate the show).

It really SOUNDS like The Wetlands.  The venue had its own sound and this is a great representation of what it sounded like in the room.  Dan's bass sounds BIG on this recording.  Tomo's drums sound crisp and clean.  For at least the first half of the first set, despite the band being named after Jon Bevo, he is buried in the mix (but the FOH mix person eventually gets this corrected).  (There is another recording of this show up on archive.org, but the fidelity/range on that recording pales next to this one!)

For better or worse (mostly, I think, worse), I didn't like some of this material very much.  A few of the songs have aged well, but others are better lost to history.

The experiment of Aaron playing acoustic on "She Comes Up Softly" is not great.  The electric version of this song is better in my opinion.

The sequence of "Wall", "She Comes Up Softly" and "Please Don't Speak of These Things", a few beautiful but midtempo songs in the middle of the first set kind of kills any momentum that they had built up with the first few songs.

"Chop" ends the first set on a strong note!

"Twitchin'" has a completely different arrangement that any previous recording I'd heard of it.

You can hear the crowd yelling/demanding GSW classics, but they don't play too many of them.

Worth mentioning are the interesting covers:  2 Beatles classics, "Dear Prudence" and "I've Got A Feeling" and the very cool Flying Burrito Brothers song "Hot Burrito #1".

After being disappointed by the Irving Plaza 1996 show and this show, I kinda decided I was done with GSW for while.  With a bit more hindsight, I can appreciate some of these songs more nowadays.  Perhaps you will love this show?
