At the top of the list was 12/1/79 until yesterday when, through the generosity of Charlie Miller, I received a very nice copy of the complete show including the elusive first set. It was always my understanding that a soundboard of the first set did not exist but . . . here it is.

View NotesNotes: - Thanks to Bob Wagner for the master (FOB) source - Thanks to Charlie Miller for the transfer and coordinating this effort - Bob was the 2nd deck in line for the 1st Set, patched out of a Technics RS-1506. Bob's TC-158 was the lead deck for the 2nd Set - Thanks to Jake Feinberg and Andrew F for the shnid31330 (FOB) audience source which supplies a patch from the 0:06 mark of "China Cat Sunflower" thru the beginning of "I Know You Rider" (7:27 total), as well as a 0:16 patch in "Drums" - There were technical issues (bad connection?)in the left channel during virtually all of "China Cat Sunflower" and the beginning of "I Know You Rider", necessitating the patch. Patch source was pitch corrected and massaged slightly to better match Bob's source - Pitch corrected Mastered by Scott Clugston December 2019

Matrix by Hunter Seamons using Final Cut Pro (FLAC > AIFF > Final Cut w/EQ > Soundtrack Pro > AIFF CD tracking via Audacity > FLAC16 via xACT w/meta-tagging) December 31, 2022
Taper Notes:
View NotesNotes: A nice, robust sounding '79 SBD tape with some hiss. Some light trimming of the AUD between songs in the first set. Hard cuts were cross faded. Reduced a momentary increase in levels in the left channel of the AUD during Loser. Briefly faded out the left channel of the AUD during Althea to remove a moment of heavy static. Not really noticeable in the matrix. Numerous subtle clicks and pops were removed throughout the show in both sources, more often in the left channel of the AUD. A much more painstaking cleanup process than usual. Very light EQ for the soundboard source. Used additional EQ to remove momentary heavy hiss in the AUD source near the beginning of China Cat Sunflower, and then after the #31330 AUD patch for I Know You Rider. Wagner's recording had some initial issues here in set 2. 24-second SBD cut in Looks Like Rain, 7-second cut in Drums, and 8-second cut before Sunshine Daydream now patched. The SBD sound seems to improve after the Looks Like Rain cut onward, just in time for the big jams - a little more dynamic and clarity.

DTS-Audio-CD 5.1 Mix
Taper Notes:
View NotesGeneral Notes: When the AUD source surfaced on bt.etree, I contacted Am-Dig to see about putting the coloborative effort into editing a matrix of this incredible show in Pittsburgh, PA. So a 5.1 and matrix will be available. The FOB AUD is an excellent recording for '79 and the SBD is balanced with everyone in the mix. There is some slight phase mostly noticeable in the first set, and it would appear the SBD source is slightly different for the second set. Pitch-wise it appears the first set is a little slow whereas the second set SBD is in pitch. The AUD is definately picking up the main PA (as opposed to a "mouth" recording which is up close and catching the stage/monitor mix) so the result is added ambience to an otherwise sterile SBD. Luckily Charlie Miller's redux of the SBD source recently helped alot since there is much less hiss in this new SBD source. This show is simply jammin', featuring the first and only Gloria Jam (10-16-81 first time with vocals) and the breakout of C.C. Rider. I also have never heard any other version of Looks Like Rain with a "stormy" intro. The first set is tight and energetic, a sign of things to come in a highly creative second set. Since disc 3 was going to be short, I decided to make an excerpt matrix of a show 10 days later that features a start from nothing Saint O. The groovy Saint intro is very unique and well worth multiple listens. 12-1-79 Reviews from archive.org: - "This is one of the classic shows from the 70's and just an incredible jam all the way through. This one is a must for any collector." - "I can only wonder how stoked the boys were to have Brent as the new guy... Gloria Jam smokes and that next "jam" is a completely different work of art." - "This show stands out in the early Brent era as one of the best. He's Gone>Gloria>CC Rider jam is about as exploratory as the band ever got in the post '76 era. In fact, it is eerily ?reminiscent of the kinds of things the band was doing in '73-74. The China>Rider, Rain to open the second set are dead on versions too." 12-11-79 Reviews from archive.org: - "That complete stop between Sailor > Saint and the sweet Saint beginning is one of the coolest moments I have ever heard from The Guyz. It is definitely a five star attraction. I played it over and over and over the other night because it was sooo unusual." - "Just for the pause (complete stop) between Lost Sailor and the EXTREMELY juicy sweet beginning of St. of Circumstance - It is a must! I love this era of The Grateful Dead. Thick, mellow, alive and jazzy."

View NotesI'm not certain, but this is likely the AUD tape made by Scott Jones, with Shure mics into a Sony TC-158 cassette deck (he taped both nights). It clearly sounds like it was made within the first fifteen rows or so, and is an excellent recording for this period. Over the years, we've all heard the excellent sbd tapes of this great show. Now here it is from the audience perspective, which is thrilling to hear. Enjoy this tremendous tape! With a big tip of the cap to Jake Feinberg for sharing these discs. :)
