View NotesCurt Kirkwood - guitar, vocals Cris Kirkwood - bass, vocals Derrick Bostrom - drums SOURCE / LINEAGE Stereo AUD master to Maxell METAL tape Borrowed mics > Borrowed Sony WM-D6 > Master METAL tape > Computer WAV > Cool Edit Pro 2000 > TLH v2.4.1 > FLAC 8 > DIME > you I don't have the specific model for the mics, but the buddy from which I borrowed the gear (thanks K!) said they cost approx. US$500. Mics were physically separate left / right channel lines which fed back to a single stereo line into the deck. The left / right lines were either pinned over each shoulder facing stage, or pinned to left/right sides under an open-holed baseball cap. I originally mastered this 2009-08-22. The left channel was lower than the right, so I bumped it up - on the dub to computer & again during some spots. After adjustments trying to compensate for mic flaws (SEE BELOW), I just added in track marks. This FLAC fileset comes directly from those final WAVs's, which only needed SBE corrections in TLH; no CD-Rs or EACs. NOTES As this is an original master & isn't too bad to start with, please DON'T remaster and repost it. (ok well it's not great, but no one's gonna be able to make this one better anyway.) - - - - ******* WARNING: audiophiles or casual fans may wanna skip this one & pick another Meat Puppets show. ******* Audio-wise, this is a dogshit venue for bands to play; a place with the worst acoustics. Maybe it was fine in the '40s to hear big bands play there, but rock bands, nuh-huh. Given that, this bugger doesn't sound too bad - NOT great, hard to hear spoken parts, but certainly listenable. But there are irritants thru large parts of the show (see below), which may cause the average fan or purist to look elsewhere. - - - - This is another in a line of 1987 shows I taped which had some nasty mic problems. For this one, the bulk of the show is okay, but about a third of it constantly had one channel cutting out & in. That left a loud scratchy skronk in one channel (VERY irritating), & often "digital click"-like sounds in the good channel too. I previously had made a 90min summary from this show of the "songs without the cutouts/ins", my listening tape for years. A few years ago, I had another 1987 show in a similar state & I was able to do a little "computer surgery" to make more of the show listenable. So now it was time to try the same thing with this Pups show. The first 40mins & last 40mins of this show were mostly fine - it's the middle 40mins that had the worst of the nastiness. I attempted to fix the click-like sounds in the good channel (sometimes it came out clean, sometimes not). Then I took patches from the good channel to replace those short "cut out/in" bits with the skronk. (How many? - 2 in the first 40mins / 3 in the last 40 / a couple hundred in the middle 40; many <11+> hours of work was required.) The results sure aren't perfect - all of this is part of the final master here / not "flaws with your download files": * you still hear the mic connection clicks in spots where it wouldn't let me remove them * you hear what sounds like dropouts / tape muches / mic bumps, all really residue from the mic probs & skronk removal * instead of cutting out, it switches to mono & back again to stereo I know these flaws provide their own irritation, but at least ya can hear the whole show AND not shred yr speaker cones. If the flaws bug ya, you could delete everything between Lost & Maiden's Milk, and have something like "my old listening tape". Why would I go through all this crap for an imperfect tape? - because IMO it was an ass-kickin' show. That middle segment had some really nice versions of tunes in there / fine Curt guitar bits (Machine), and I'd hate to just toss 'em out. I'm including samples of both an okay song (Hot) & one with some'a the flaws (Machine), so you know what you're in for. - - - - Putting aside the flaws with my tape, it really *WAS* a fine show. A nice bunch of tracks from Huevos, some oldies & some covers too. < HELP ME OUT ON SOME OF THE COVERS!!! > They said it was the first time they played Bad Love live. I esp. like the super-fast version of She's Hot, and Out My Way with the fast ending. The bit after Hot Pink may just be an extended jam, but "such a beautiful night" is hollered out near the end. Big Rock Candy Mountain is just a teaser verse. - - - - I had this documented in my list for years, but never remember trading a copy (with all the problems, small wonder). I know I made a copy (of the 90min edit) for a few friends, but that's it, so this is its debut for most of you & for sure it's the first time complete. Crank it up and ENJOY! it as I have, and share it so others can hear it. - - - - Tape gaps - there was a tape flip after Paradise / a swap after Liquified / one last flip after Crazy. Following Liquified, the opening notes (or maybe just tune-up) to Bad Boy are missed, but not the first verse. The tape segment lengths required adding a gap to break things apart for 2 discs. There was a quiet spot b4 Up On The Sun & it's kinda near the show's midpoint, so I did a straight track break right there. I SBE-fixed to both those natural tape breakpoints & to that 2nd-disc added breakpoint. I edited out about 40sec of clapping b4 the encore, and I added a fade at the end to toss out a bit more clapping. Besides maybe those first couple notes of Bad Boy, all that's missing is some clapping. Speaking of... I clap. Sorry. At least there's no talking from me. And I leave everything in, warts and all - tuning, some of the claps before the encore & at the end. - - - - Filenames have numbers on the end that are the TIMES (ex. - "...-359" is 3min59sec long). Filenames for guessed titles have "(QMEXQM)" in the name, as "?!?" isn't allowed in names. I mark the start of tracks when the music or count-in begins, not the talking about it before it starts. - - - - The usual schmack applies here: Please don't post this anywhere but DIME. *(permission received from jschmoe to post on archive!) Please retain this original info file data with any reseedings. Please don't transfer to MP3 or other lossy formats. Please only trade this with others, don't sell it. Please support the artists involved by purchasing their official product in massive quantities. files renamed and posted to archive.org by morst 2018 November Thanks to Derrick Bostrom for song title assistance!
